Wolfsburg vs Hertha Berlin - Match Preview
⚽ 27 May 2023 - 13:30 GMT +0
It all comes down to this for Wolfsburg, who head into this final-day clash against Hertha Berlin knowing their fate is out of their own hands. Trailing sixth-placed Bayer Leverkusen by a point, European football hangs in the balance for Wolfsburg, who know they will need to at least better Leverkusen’s result against Bochum if they’re to have any chance of sneaking into sixth, but even then a host of permutations mean a draw may not be enough, with Eintracht Frankfurt also holding an outside shot from back in eighth.
A 2-0 defeat against Freiburg last time out left them in this position, but as they know they hold the advantage of ending the season at home, their vision should be clear. The fact their home form has been impressive of late (W2, D4) should fill Wolfsburg with belief, as should boss Niko Kovač’s record of having won three of his last four managerial H2Hs against Hertha (D1).
Clubs playing for something at this stage of the season typically look for sides playing for nothing, and in Hertha, Wolfsburg has found one of those sides. Already consigned to the second-tier for next season, Die Alte Dame is merely playing for pride as they close out a forgettable season, one which certainly looks set to end on a sour note on the back of just one win in 11 league games (D3, L7).
Hertha will undoubtedly be keen to bow out of the Bundesliga on a high, but considering their last away league win came in September (D2, L11), there appears precious little chance of that happening. The last nine games in that run have seen Hertha concede an eye-watering average of over three goals per game, and considering they lost this reverse fixture 5-0 back in January, few would rule out their record worsening here.
📋 Players to watch: Wolfsburg could turn to Luca Waldschmidt if they need some late inspiration, as all four of his Bundesliga goals this term have arrived after the 70th minute. A happy traveller, Hertha’s Stevan Jovetić has seen each of his four goals this term arrive on the road, though they all came in losing causes.
⚡ Hot stat: Wolfsburg’s home league games this season have averaged 2.13 goals in the first half.
