One of six teams still vulnerable to joining Elche and Espanyol through the La Liga (LL) relegation trapdoor, Valladolid begins this final round of an exhausting season below the dreaded line. While it seems as though only a win would be of much use in preventing Pucela’s instant return to the second tier, their 0-0 draw at Almeria in the previous round could yet prove invaluable, as it gave them an H2H advantage over the Andalusians.

In turn, Valladolid will save themselves merely by bettering Almeria’s result away to Espanyol, and any repeat of the performance that saw a shock 3-1 win over new champions Barcelona in their last home game will give them every chance. That said, it’s now just one clean sheet in seven home games, reinforcing fears that a lack of staying power at the back could prove fatal.

Although visitors to Getafe start the round in 14th place, they cannot relax just yet. A draw is enough for them to stay up, while a defeat would see demotion if all teams sitting between themselves and their hosts also win. However, the Azulones’ strong five-game form (W3, D1, L1) only underlines just how improbable this scenario is – especially with the sole defeat coming against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu.

Getafe’s last road trip also brought a timely surprise, in the form of a 1-0 victory over European aspirants Betis. But if José Bordalás’ men are to make events elsewhere irrelevant, they would be well-advised to find a way to turn their back on a run of six away games without scoring multiple goals. That includes four blanks (D1, L3) – a return which combines ominously with a winless H2H away record for Getafe this century (D5, L5).
