Iga Swiatek has reached the quarterfinals of Wimbledon for the first time after playing one of the toughest matches of her career. After wasting a couple of set points in the first set, the top seed had to save two consecutive match points on her serve before defeating Belinda Bencic, 6-7, 7-6, 6-3.

The match lasted three hours and it was the first time in the Pole's professional career that she faced two tiebreaks in one match. It is just the third time she has rallied from a setdown in 2023. The world no. 1 must be hugely relieved since the last-16s are the least successful stages in her slam career.

She held only six career wins on grass courts until two weeks ago and had never reached a quarterfinal on the surface. The four-time major champion has since gone 7-0 on the green, starting with a semifinal run in Bad Homburg where she was forced to withdraw due to precautionary illness concerns.

Here at Wimbledon, she kicked things off with three straight-set wins and is on a 14-match winning streak. The 22-year-old hopes to complete her set of major semifinals with a 5-1 record in the quarterfinals; the only loss came to Maria Sakkari in Paris in 2021 where she was the defending champion.

Elina Svitolina played one of the most entertaining matches of the tournament to oust Victoria Azarenka on the no. 1 court in the clash of former semifinalists. She was 0-5 against the Belarusian coming into Sunday but rallied from a set and break down to prevail 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 in two hours and 46 minutes.

It has been a little more than three months since the 28-year-old returned from her year-long maternity break and she has already had a WTA title (Strasbourg) and back-to-back slam quarterfinals. The former world no. 3 is 12-2 since the middle of May, including defeating two top 20 names.

She dismissed five-time champion Venus Williams, 6-4, 6-3, 28th seed Elise Mertens, 6-1, 1-6, 6-1, and two-time major finalist Sofia Kenin, 7-6, 6-2. The only other time she made it this far at SW19, the former WTA finals champion beat Karolina Muchova at this stage for a 2019 semifinal finish.

Overall, however, the Ukrainian holds a 2-7 career record in Grand Slam quarterfinals and 0-4 when facing top 10 players. Last month, she ran into world no. 2 Aryna Sabalenka at Roland-Garros and lost in straight sets. Both of her semifinal appearances came in 2019, including at the US Open.
