Mallorca and Cádiz have work to do yet to secure their place in La Liga (LL) next season after both suffered away losses with second-half consolation goals last weekend. Starting this round seven points above the danger zone following a forgettable trip to Girona (L 2-1), Mallorca are closing in on mathematical safety as they now go in search of a third consecutive home win against Cadiz, which would also avenge the 2-0 loss suffered in January’s reverse fixture.

As far as avoiding relegation goes, Mallorca has the advantage of three home matches against teams all starting this round outside the top eight, though a 1-0 loss against Elche in March as part of a W4, D2, L2 LL home record at home to such opposition is just one reminder that they cannot take these games for granted. That defeat was the first of five straight LL home games that saw them fail to score before half-time, which is not often a precursor to success.

Cádiz will be hoping to put their heaviest defeat in 22 LL games (L 5-1 at Atlético Madrid) behind them, and after avoiding consecutive LL losses over an eight-month period since opening the season with five straight defeats, there’s a long list of results to suggest they can. However, Cádiz has not faced back-to-back away trips since the World Cup, so this will be somewhat of a new challenge for the relegation strugglers.

Just one point separates Cádiz from the bottom three, but with four current bottom-half clubs to come in their remaining five games, they will be graced with some wonderful opportunities to peel away from the relegation battle, even if they too have mixed results against such teams.

📋 Players to watch: Mallorca midfielder Lee Kang-in has discovered some rare but timely scoring form at Estadi Mallorca Son Moix, striking inside the 15 minutes following half-time in three of their last four LL home games. Hoping to beat him onto the scoresheet will be Théo Bongonda, after one of his two opening goals in 2022/23 came in the reverse H2H.
