Hertha Berlin vs Stuttgart - Match Preview

⚽ 6 May 2023 - 13:30 GMT +0

After impressively keeping Bayern Munich quiet for nearly 70 minutes, basement club Hertha Berlin ultimately succumbed to a 2-0 defeat last Sunday to stretch their Bundesliga losing streak to four matches. That plays part of a wider eight-match winless run (D2, L6), but despite now being six points adrift of safety, coach Pál Dárdai isn’t giving up hope, saying “the chance is still there” with two of their remaining four games at home against direct relegation strugglers.

The first of those is against Stuttgart, a side who the Old Lady have beaten in five of their last six (L1) home league H2Hs. With 17 of their 22 points this season being secured at the Olympiastadion, Hertha will have realistic hopes of winning both their remaining home matches against relegation rivals, but they may have to be patient, as six of their last seven home goals have arrived beyond the hour mark.

Stuttgart lost 3-2 to Eintracht Frankfurt in the DFB-Pokal semi-final on Wednesday, leaving them with no more distractions as they themselves push for survival. Manager Sebastian Hoeneß was visibly disappointed but mentioned that they “will prepare to take the next big step this weekend” as they start this round just above the relegation play-off spot by virtue of goal difference alone.

On a positive note, Stuttgart has seen an uptick in their league form, with a four-game unbeaten run (W2, D2) raising the belief that they can yet beat the drop. The visitors have proved to be stubborn on the road lately too, claiming five points across their last four league trips (W1, D2, L1), a run which offers hope of posting a first top-flight H2H double since the 1990/91 season after winning the reverse fixture 2-1.

📋 Players to watch: Jessic Ngankam has been in the thick of the action for Hertha in his last five league games (G2, A1, YC2) while a goal from Stuttgart’s Serhou Guirassy could signal action, as seven of his last eight league strikes have come in matches that produced over 2.5 goals.

Hot stat: Eight of the last 11 Bundesliga H2Hs have seen the home side of the day score 2+ goals.

Hoffenheim vs Eintracht Frankfurt - Match Preview

⚽ 6 May 2023 - 13:30 GMT +0

Hoffenheim is firmly back in the relegation mire after a three-match winless run in the Bundesliga, including back-to-back losses, which left them just a point clear of the drop zone ahead of this round. The Kraichgauer’s 1-0 defeat at RB Leipzig piles on the pressure ahead of the visit of Eintracht Frankfurt, a team boss Pellegrino Matarazzo has never beaten in his managerial career (D3, L2)!

A miserable season has perhaps made playing in front of their own fans a burden for Hoffenheim, as they’ve won just two of their last 12 league matches at the PreZero Arena (D2, L8). Combine that with their failure to win ten of the last 11 H2H meetings against Frankfurt (W1, D3, L7), and it’s likely to be a nerve-shredding end of the season for the Hoffenheim faithful.

The Eagles may still be soaring by kick-off after advancing to the final of the DFB Pokal in midweek, coming from behind to secure a 3-2 victory over Stuttgart. Oliver Glasner praised his ‘awesome group’ of players after reaching a second cup final in as many seasons, but the Austrian now needs to find the winning touch in the league after nine matches without success (D5, L4).

That miserable run has almost ended their hopes of returning to Europe via their league finish, and hitting the road here is unlikely to inspire a turnaround given that Frankfurt has failed to win an away league match in 2023 (D3, L5). Problems exist at both ends of the pitch, with the Eagles the only side in the division yet to keep an away clean sheet in 2022/23, while they’ve not managed to score more than a single goal in any of their last seven league outings.

📋 Players to watch: Andrej Kramarić appears to be Hoffenheim’s best hope of getting on the scoresheet after netting four in six league matches, although he’s managed just one in 12 career appearances against Frankfurt (W3, D4, L5). No player in the Bundesliga has directly contributed to more goals this term than Randal Kolo Muani (G13, A10), three of which came in the 4-2 win in this season's reverse fixture (G1, A2).

Hot stat: Hoffenheim has been ahead at half-time in just six of their 30 Bundesliga games this term (HT: D11, L13).

Werder Bremen vs Bayern Munich - Match Preview

⚽ 6 May 2023 - 13:30 GMT +0

Werder Bremen have largely steered clear of the relegation zone in their first season back in the top flight, but they missed out on setting up this game for mathematical safety by giving away a lead to lose 2-1 against relegation-threatened Schalke last weekend. Sitting seven points clear of the drop zone prior to the final four rounds, Bremen have likely already done enough, although a tricky run-in where they play three of the top five could see Bremen rue missed opportunities.

That run-in begins here, and a Weserstadion return is unlikely to help them secure safety, as not only do they face league leaders Bayern Munich, but Werder is also the worst home side in the division (W5, D1, L9)! Even so, neutral fans may be encouraged to tune in as the River Islanders have seen a joint league-high 21 (70%) of their games at any venue witness both teams score, whilst 21 of their Bundesliga games have also produced at least three goals, another league-high!

The most fiercely contested title race in Bundesliga history took yet another turn last weekend as Dortmund relinquished control of their Meisterschale fate by drawing against local rivals Bochum. Bayern didn’t waste the opportunity handed to them by coolly dispatching Hertha Berlin 2-0, although that game ended a four-game winless run for the Rekordmeister (W1, D2, L2), so there could be more twists and turns to come.

Bookending a rotten run of four defeats from Bayern’s last six competitive away games (W2, L4) is next on the agenda for Thomas Tuchel’s men. That shouldn’t be too difficult if history is any indicator considering Bayern’s current 12-game winning run of Bundesliga H2Hs here in Bremen, although conceding six times across their two most recent trips this season may serve to temper expectations.

📋 Players to watch: Marvin Ducksch’s 12th Bundesliga goal of the season last weekend means Werder has two players on 12+ top-flight goals in one season for the first time since 2008/09, along with Niclas Füllkrug (G16). As for Bayern, Serge Gnabry became the only player to hit at least ten Bundesliga goals in each of the last seven seasons with his recent strike against Hertha.

Hot streak: Werder Bremen has conceded at least twice in each of their seven league games against top-five opponents (W1, L6).
