Stuttgart vs Bayer Leverkusen - Match Preview

⚽ 14 May 2023 - 13:30 GMT +0

The survival prospects of Stuttgart took yet another hit in the previous round as a second consecutive defeat coupled with a Schalke win dumped the Swabians below the dreaded dotted line. It took a last-minute goal on the final day of last season to save Stuttgart from the relegation play-off, which is where they’re heading as it stands unless they can find some form quickly.

Two points from safety ahead of the round, Stuttgart’s change of manager from Bruno Labbadia to Sebastian Hoeneß has, however, yielded four points from his first two home games (W1, D1), the same return that Labbadia accrued in his final five home games. Welcoming a European challenger won’t particularly scare the new man either, as his side has scored at least twice in all but one of their home league games against top-nine opponents (W4, D1, L3).

Bayer Leverkusen is also no stranger to a new manager bounce as Xabi Alonso has transformed the club from relegation candidates to top-six aspirants since his October appointment. With just nine points to play for and an eight-point gap to the top five (and top four) Leverkusen will likely battle it out to finish in sixth place, a spot which could yet become more attractive should Leipzig win the upcoming DFB-Pokal final.

For all Leverkusen’s improvement, their recent competitive form has left something to be desired (W2, D3, L2). And with little time to ponder a 1-0 defeat to Roma in their Europa League semi-final first leg, it wouldn’t be surprising if Alonso makes wholesale changes here ahead of the home return leg in what is their best chance to pick up a first European trophy since the 1980s.

📋 Players to watch: Serhou Guirassy scored his ninth league goal of the season for Stuttgart last weekend, moving him to just one shy of his personal career-best return in one campaign. As for Leverkusen, Moussa Diaby has a chance to score the match opener in a third straight H2H against Stuttgart and he heads into this in respectable form across his last five appearances (G1, A2).

Hot stat: Leverkusen has defeated Stuttgart more often than any other side in Bundesliga action (W40, D20, L23).

RB Leipzig vs Werder Bremen - Match Preview

⚽ 14 May 2023 - 15:30 GMT +0

The weekend’s Bundesliga action will draw to a close with a crunch clash at Red Bull Arena when RB Leipzig looks to maintain their slender one-point cushion in the top four that they had achieved by the end of the previous round. Freiburg will be happy to see the back of Leipzig after they beat them to reach the DFB-Pokal final and usurped them from the top four in the space of a week.

Given that the two clubs just one point behind them play each other this round, Marco Rose’s men will certainly kick-off as a top-four side and have a brilliant chance to solidify that position. There is no shortage of stats to boost hopes of doing just that too, as the Red Bulls’ rampant run of six wins across their last seven competitive games is supplemented by a 100% unbeaten record in Bundesliga action against promoted opposition (W23, D3)!

No side has ever played more top-flight games against the new boys without ever losing, so the latest contenders to try and break that streak are Werder Bremen, a side who will know by kickoff how many points (if any) are needed to confirm safety. Even at the start of the round, the River Islanders were probably set for another season in the top flight with their current 35-point haul, yet improving on some torrid nine-game form (W1, D2, L6) would be beneficial before heading into the off-season.

The often prolific frontline of Bremen may well cause Leipzig a headache after accruing ten goals across their last five away games, yet just one victory in that period points to a major area for improvement (W1, D2, L2). Ole Werner’s men have thrown caution to the wind this season and that is perhaps best illustrated by their record of conceding at least twice in all but one away league trip against sides beginning the round above them (W1, D4, L4).

📋 Players to watch: Leipzig midfielder Kevin Kampl has made a joint career-best four Bundesliga goal contributions against Bremen (G1, A3) and could be primed to add to that after scoring twice in his last four games. Trying to get the better of him will be Bremen’s in-demand Marvin Duksch (G12), the man who scored a hat-trick in their only league win since February!

Hot streak: Leipzig hasn’t played any side more often than Bremen in top-flight home games without ever dropping a point (W5).
