Schalke vs Eintracht Frankfurt - Match Preview
⚽ 20 May 2023 - 13:30 GMT +0
Schalke’s tough Bundesliga run-in continued with a 6-0 defeat to Bayern Munich last weekend, leaving them up against it in their battle to beat the drop, as their remaining games are against Eintracht Frankfurt and RB Leipzig. Victory here won’t guarantee them anything, but having won three of their four league games prior to last weekend’s humbling (L1), survival is still within the realms of possibility, even if they have to win the relegation play-off.
In fact, a spot in a relegation play-off could be the best Schalke can hope for after this weekend, as should they lose here and Bochum and Hoffenheim win their respective games, they will be consigned to a bottom-three finish.
One big problem for Schalke is their poor home form against sides battling for European qualification, as they’ve claimed just two points from hosting teams starting this round in the top eight (D2, L5). But they’ve reason to be optimistic here as they’ve won three of the last four home H2Hs (L1), and as the last six H2Hs here were won by a one-goal margin (W3, L3), this could be another close-fought contest.
Eintracht revived their flagging league campaign with a much-needed 3-0 win over Mainz last time out to snap a ten-match Bundesliga winless sequence (D5, L5), but they might need help from others if they’re to finish in the top-six. “We’re in the tunnel and we can see Europe at the end of it,” manager Oliver Glasner said after the Mainz game, but with his side also in the DFB-Pokal final, their focus perhaps lies elsewhere.
In the meantime, though, they must try to break another long winless run, as they’ve not won an away league game since early November (D4, L6), conceding at least three times in each of their last three such fixtures. Ahead of their last Bundesliga road trip of the season, they can perhaps be encouraged by the fact all four of their league victories on the road this term (D5, L7) were against sides currently in the bottom half.
📋 Players to watch: Schalke’s Tom Krauss has been involved in plenty of action recently, scoring once and picking up three yellow cards in Schalke’s last five games. Also no stranger to the referee’s notebook, Frankfurt’s Randal Kolo Muani has seen his last three goals arrive after the 55th minute.
⚡ Hot streak: None of Frankfurt’s last six league games was level at half-time (Frankfurt HT: W2, L4).
