Daniil Medvedev might not have been pleased with the way his round-of-16 match ended, but he will be delighted with the final outcome, considering that Wimbledon was the only Grand Slam where he hadn't previously reached the quarterfinals. That changes now. Medvedev was completely in control of the match and was on his way to a comfortable straight-set victory before his opponent Jiri Lehecka was forced to retire, trailing 4-6 2-6.
Securing a spot in the quarterfinals this year would be an especially gratifying accomplishment for the Russian, given the events that unfolded during the grass swing in 2022. As the world's top-ranked player at the time, he was unable to participate in the tournament due to the ban imposed on all Russian and Belarusian players. Reflecting on the situation, Medvedev expressed mixed feelings, stating, "On the one hand, I can understand (the decision) and, on the other, I find it unfair."
The former world #1 has had a shocking season in Grand Slam tournaments thus far in 2023, suffering a straight-set loss to Sebastian Korda in the third round of the Australian Open and a huge five-set upset against Thiago Seyboth Wild in the first round of the French Open. On Wednesday, the 2021 US Open champion will make his first quarterfinal appearance at the slam level since last year's Australian Open, where he was only a few points and games away from defeating Rafael Nadal and lifting consecutive slam titles.
He has an outstanding track record in quarterfinal matches in recent years, having lost just three out of his last 16 encounters across various levels. Notably, two of those losses occurred on grass against Roberto Bautista Agut in Mallorca 2022 and Halle last month. His current record in Grand Slam quarterfinals is an impressive 5-1, with the sole loss being against Stefanos Tsitsipas at the French Open in 2021.
Form and momentum can have a remarkable impact in sports, particularly in individual sports like tennis, and Christopher Eubanks is currently experiencing this phenomenon on the grandest stage of all. He was struggling against players like Aleksandar Kovacevic (won in three sets) and Jurij Rodionov (lost in straight sets) in his first outing on grass this year at Surbiton Challenger but in his most recent match at Wimbledon, he upset the world #5 Stefanos Tsitsipas to achieve a career-defining quarterfinal result.
Prior to 2023, the American had only secured victory in nine main-draw matches in tour-level events throughout his career but has matched that number in his last two outings alone. He lifted the maiden ATP title of his career on the grass courts in Mallorca earlier this month and has followed it up by adding four more matches to his winning streak.
His ascent to the top level commenced with a significant performance against none other than Daniil Medvedev at the Miami Masters earlier this year. Interestingly, there is a strong possibility that his current impressive winning streak may come to an end at the hands of the same opponent. He won six matches in a row as a qualifier and put on a great show against Medvedev in the quarterfinal in Miami, which bolstered his confidence and belief in his abilities, propelling him to strive for further success at the highest level of the sport.
"Today feels a lot more like I'm here, trust it, I'm playing well. Let's just see how long we can keep this thing going," expressed Eubanks with enthusiasm following his competitive showdown against Daniil Medvedev at the Miami Masters in 2023. Subsequently, he has engaged in tightly contested matches with opponents such as Holger Rune on clay and Hubert Hurkacz on grass. He then achieved two of the most significant victories of his career against Cameron Norrie and Stefanos Tsitsipas at this Wimbledon, further establishing his growing prowess on the professional circuit.
Eubanks has pleasantly surprised the tennis world with his unexpected run, ensuring the American presence in the Wimbledon quarterfinals. In the previous year, his fellow countryman Taylor Fritz reached this stage of the tournament but unfortunately lost a match that appeared to be highly winnable against Rafael Nadal, extending to five sets.
📋 Head-to-head: Daniil Medvedev leads 1-0. Undoubtedly, this upcoming match presents a challenging test for the Russian. He is certainly aware of the potential danger that awaits him on Wednesday, given his previous loss in a crucial grass-court match against a significant underdog who possessed a similar playing style and was in the form of his life, 4-6 1-6 in the championship match in ATP 's-Hertogenbosch last year.
Anticipate a closely contested match between the pair, which could potentially require one or two tiebreakers. Daniil Medvedev holds a slight advantage in this matchup due to his valuable experience at this level.
