Getafe vs Elche - Match Preview
⚽ 20 May 2023 - 16:30 GMT +0
Time is running out for Getafe to kickstart their La Liga survival bid after a tame 1-0 defeat at a much-changed Real Madrid left them one point adrift of safety ahead of this round. The Azulones have won just one of their last eight league matches (D2, L5), and their desperation for points has led them to appeal that result against Real due to an allegedly illegal substitution!
Perhaps the visit of already-relegated Elche, therefore, comes at the perfect time, especially as it falls at home where Getafe have lost just one of their last seven matches at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez (W4, D2). Keeping it tight at the back could be key as the Azulones boast the best defensive record among sides in the bottom six, but they’ll take nothing for granted as the home side on the day has won just two of the nine top-flight H2Hs.
All that visiting Elche have left to play for is pride after their relegation was confirmed two weeks ago. Perhaps the sealing of their fate liberated Los Franjiverdes, who stunned Atlético Madrid with an unlikely 1-0 win in their last outing that new manager Sebastián Beccacece was “delighted” with as he prepares for their hopeful return to the top flight. That made it two victories in three matches for the division’s basement boys, who once again will chase back-to-back league wins for the first time since April 2022.
To do that, Elche will need just their second away win of the league season, with their six points earned on the road the third-worst total of any side in Europe’s top-five leagues. Beccacece, Elche’s fourth boss of the season, will need to get the division’s joint-worst attack firing, as they’ve failed to score in a league-high nine of their 17 travelling fixtures this term.
📋 Players to watch: Set to return from suspension, Getafe hitman Enes Ünal has netted three times in four personal H2Hs against Elche, although he’s been on the winning side just once (D1, L2). Fidel has been at the heart of the visitors’ recent form, directly contributing to three goals in their latest two victories (G2, A1).
⚡ Hot stat: Only two of Gefafe’s last nine matches have produced over 2.5 goals.
