Everton vs Bournemouth - Match Preview

⚽ 28 May 2023 - 15:30 GMT +0

It’s crunch time for Everton, who know a victory here against Bournemouth will preserve their top-flight status for a 69th straight season - only Arsenal have accumulated more consecutive seasons in England’s top-flight. Solid form in this crucial final month of the campaign has helped them maintain control of their own destiny, with only champions Manchester City getting the better of them across their last four Premier League (PL) matches (W1, D2).

The Toffees know that anything less than a win could open the door for Leeds United and Leicester City - both two points behind inside the relegation zone - to profit. With home games against Tottenham and West Ham, both look to have tougher assignments on paper than the Merseysiders, yet look away at Everton fans because your side has a worrying record of losing five of the last six season finales (D1) - one of which came at Goodison Park against Bournemouth in 2019/20!

That was one of four straight competitive H2H wins for Bournemouth, who have enjoyed encounters with Everton in recent years. In each of those contests, they scored 3+ goals, but it’s hard to see a repeat of that feat here based on the fact they’ve netted one or fewer in five of their last six PL matches.

The last three games in that run all ended in defeat for the Cherries, which adds some weight to the notion that they’ve taken their foot off the gas pedal after securing their own PL survival. However, with five at present, perhaps matching their highest tally of PL away wins in a single season (six) might give them some added motivation to get the win that would be so dearly welcomed by Leeds and Leicester.

📋 Players to watch: With Dominic Calvert-Lewin out injured, Demarai Gray is expected to lead Everton’s attack and he scored one of his six competitive goals this season against Bournemouth. Jaidon Anthony is without a goal since January for the Cherries, so will welcome coming up against the Toffees given he’s already netted in both games against them this season.

Hot stat: Bournemouth’s last draw came on February 11 against Newcastle. Every other team has drawn at least once since then, with Everton accumulating the most stalemates in that time (six).
