Delhi Capitals vs Mumbai Indians - Match Preview
🏏 11 April 2023 - 18:00 GMT +0
After a scintillating Sunday left every Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 franchise with at least one loss, only two teams remain without a win. With those sides Delhi Capitals (L3) and Mumbai Indians (L2) set to play at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Tuesday in match #16, there will be some respite for one side.
The home fans will be hoping it is the Capitals who break the duck, having won five of their last seven matches at this venue against Mumbai. Yet, the lop-sided losses this season (50 runs, six wickets, 57 runs) do not inspire confidence as the team continues to manufacture whirlpools to kill their own chances. Captain David Warner has been their best bat so far (158 runs @ 7.02) but with no other batter even aggregating more than 54 runs, there’s enough evidence of where their problems lie.
With Mitchell Marsh off for his marriage and Prithvi Shaw locking his IPL 2022 form back home in Mumbai, there seems to be no solution to their problems. There’s no respite with the ball either as none of the Delhi bowlers could aggregate more than three wickets so far while the economy rates of at least four regular bowlers with 8+ overs in their kitty have crossed nine runs per over.
Normally that would be music to the ears of Mumbai management, but the swirl of their problems is so severe that they are almost tone-deaf. Their batting run rate of 8.20rpo is amongst the lowest as they struggle to shake off the memories of being a wooden spoon holder let alone rekindle the golden days of being five-time champions. It’s still early days and just two losses (eight wickets & seven wickets) but with only Tilak Varma (106 runs, SR 9.94rpo) showing his batting prowess, runs seem to have dried up even before the Indian summer kicked in.
The oasis isn’t far off, thankfully, as ‘Baby AB’ Dewald Brevis is biding his time on the bench. There are pressing concerns with the bowling unit as well, with Mumbai only picking up five wickets across two matches in IPL 2023. Australia’s Riley Meredith has joined as a replacement for fellow countryman Jhye Richardson although he may not be their elixir based on recent IPL form – highlighted by three wicketless returns in his last five matches.
⚡ Players to watch: This could end up being the tussle for supremacy between the two under-pressure captains. Delhi’s David Warner has scored at least 48 in five of his last nine matches against Mumbai Indians, smashing at least five boundary fours each time. He’s Delhi’s top-scorer in all three matches this season. Warner’s Mumbai counterpart Rohit Sharma has scored at least 41 in three of his last five matches against Delhi Capitals, hitting at least two sixes each time.
📋 Stat attack: Four of the last five first-inning IPL scores at this venue have been 171 or more.
