🌿 Surface - Grass
🏟 Location - London, United Kingdom
Alex de Minaur is enjoying yet another successful grass swing, and had it not been for the top seed and current world number one, Carlos Alcaraz, he would have secured his second grass title in London as he was only halted by the Spaniard in the championship match a few days ago.
The world #17, who has often fallen short in significant events throughout his career, had a rare chance to advance to the quarterfinals at the prestigious Wimbledon tournament in 2022. Throughout that tournament, he capitalized on a relatively favourable draw, defeating Hugo Dellien, Jack Draper, and Liam Broady. However, he, unfortunately, let slip a two-set advantage in the match against Cristian Garin, ultimately missing out on a spot in the quarterfinals.
Currently, he is enjoying a four-match winning streak in first-round matches at slams. This year, he secured two of those victories at the Australian Open and the French Open, where he reached the round of 16 and second round, respectively.
Kimmer Coppejans emerged as one of the unexpected success stories during the qualifying rounds of Wimbledon. He was able to break his disappointing streak on grass and secure a place in the main draw. He achieved this by defeating Timofey Skatov, Zizou Bergs, and Taro Daniel, despite being considered the underdog in all three matches.
Before this year's Wimbledon qualifiers, the Belgian had a challenging record on grass, losing all eight matches he played on that surface between 2012 and 2022. Furthermore, out of his 26 appearances at slams, only three of them resulted in reaching the main draw, with the remaining 23 campaigns ending in the qualifying stages. On Tuesday, he will aim to secure his first-ever victory in the main draw of a slam.
📋 Head-to-head: Kimmer Coppejans leads 1-0 (6-3 6-3 at the Australian Open 2016, QR1). Since their last encounter in Melbourne seven years ago, Coppejans has not shown any progress and, in fact, has experienced a decline in his performance. On the other hand, Alex de Minaur has made remarkable strides during this period. As a result, de Minaur rightfully enters the match as the clear favourite to win and level the head-to-head series between them.
