Even the news of Ivan Toney’s eight-month ban wasn’t enough to slow Brentford’s momentum as we head into the final throes of the season. A run of four wins across the last five Premier League (PL) rounds has ensured the Bees have a slim chance of achieving European qualification on the final day should they win, whilst Spurs and Villa fail to win their games. That’s not too bad for a side known as ‘just a bus stop in Hounslow’!

Brentford’s solid run of form was bookended by a stunning 3-1 win over Tottenham, a result which completed a collection of wins against the PL ‘Big Six’ sides since their promotion. Five of them came this season and that includes an away win over the three-time champions Manchester City, who arrive in London looking to avoid a losing league double against Brentford for the first time since 1937/38!

The result of this game will ultimately pale into insignificance for the PL champions, who have crucial FA Cup and Champions League finals on the horizon to achieve an elusive treble! Pep Guardiola wasn’t too harsh on his players for playing out a 1-1 draw against Brighton in midweek after they “drank all the alcohol in Manchester” just last weekend after learning of their glorious title achievement.

A trip to the capital to round off the PL campaign is unlikely to faze Guardiola’s men, who have already won five of their six capital city league trips this season (W5, L1). In fact, they could become the very first team in PL history to win six London away games in one campaign if they can turn Brentford over, a seemingly likely outcome when considering City’s incredible unbeaten competitive form (W20, D5).

📋 Players to watch: Bryan Mbeumo dragged Brentford’s European push to the final day with three second-half goal contributions in the penultimate round (G2, A1), yet he only managed a 6.4 rating and a yellow card in the reverse victory. As for City, Phil Foden staked his claim for more game time by scoring the opener in a rare start during midweek on. He also scored his side’s only goal in the reverse.
